Description of Work:

The Inner Voices of Blue is a composition by Miriama Young, commissioned by New Millennium Ensemble with mezzo-soprano Rebecca Ringle in 2006. The piece features a pierrot ensemble with mezzo-soprano and percussion, and is based on the poem "Côte d’Azur" by Sarah Arvio. The composition renders through sound a fleeting moment of oceanic immersion, as the water speaks its mysteries. The spoken voices in the piece provoke the sea into a series of tidal undulations, each its own, until subsumed by a breaker wave of vocal lyricism. The composition was first performed by Rebecca Ringle and New Millennium Ensemble at Taplin Auditorium, Princeton University in November 2006. It has also been performed by the New Music Group at Aberdeen University Chapel in Scotland in May 2009. Alan Cooper reviewed the UK premiere of the piece in 2008, calling it a moving and wonderfully imaginative piece of sound painting.
