"Time & Tide: Echoes of Sydney Harbour" - This piece intertwines field recordings of the Harbour with live brass and percussion to celebrate the life of Tempe Merewether and re-imagine the historical soundworld of the Harbour. Commissioned by the Sydney Symphony Orchestra with the generous support of Dr Janet Merewether in memory of her mother, Tempe Merewether OAM, this 11-minute work captures the movement of the Harbour tide that transcends lifetimes. The fixed media track features an imagined soundscape of Sydney Harbour across the past century, playing alongside the evocations of fog horns and dance-like rhythms in the brass instrumentalists. The percussion part is medium-hard challenging and very active, while the brass are of medium challenge. The work was first performed by Sydney Symphony Fellows at SSO Fellows: Mozart, Wagner, Young - Cocktail Hour (Sydney Opera House, Utzon Room) on September 22, 2018. The composer acknowledges additional support from the University of Melbourne Faculty of Fine Arts and Music.
